Port St. Maarten is affirming its status as the leading port in the Caribbean by investing heavily in technology and infrastructure to enhance efficiency, security, and productivity. These strategic advancements are designed to support the port’s continued growth, particularly in the vital transshipment sector, and reinforce its crucial role in the economic stability of St. Maarten and its neighboring islands.

Leveraging Tech to Lead the Region

The port’s strategic focus on technology and infrastructure development is a testament to its commitment to serving the needs of its customers and the wider community. As a vital first port of call for inbound cargo from Europe and a feeder port for Anguilla, Montserrat, St. Barths, St. Kitts & Nevis, and Antigua and Barbuda, Port St. Maarten remains dedicated to facilitating growth and contributing to the health and well-being of the region.

Central to this operational excellence is the Global Logistic System (GLS) software, a customized platform implemented in partnership with Dutch companies IT Partner BV and Dalosy Industrial Systems. This advanced system has fully automated port operations, speeding up clearance processes from days to just minutes and streamlining everything from vessel and berth planning to cargo handling and billing. All port employees are fully trained and certified in using the GLS software, contributing to higher employee efficiency and satisfaction. GLS is being upgraded together with IT Partner BV and will soon be known by its new name Center and will include a TOS (Terminal Operating Software) module for our (container) cargo terminal.

The port’s Captain David Cargo Quay has undergone significant expansion, increasing its length to 540 meters with an alongside depth of 10.5 meters. The facility now boasts a 3,000-TEU container storage area and is equipped with state-of-the-art Gottwald HMK 260E mobile harbor cranes, each capable of lifting up to 100 tonnes. These investments have directly translated to higher productivity, with crane operations achieving rates of up to 23 moves per hour—a notable increase over the industry average.

In addition to its physical and software-based enhancements, Port St. Maarten is pioneering a Port Community System (PCS) to drive the digitalization of logistics. This initiative, developed with partners like Portbase Rotterdam, will create a single-window platform for data centralization and sharing among key stakeholders, including Customs, the Coast Guard, and other government entities. This secure, cloud-based system will provide real-time information on cargo and container movements, further improving operational excellence and cementing the port’s position as a modern, competitive logistical hub.
